At the G20, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva urges developed countries to bring forward climate change goals. Indeed, the President of Brazil opened the G20 summit by calling for greater action to slow global warming, stating that developed countries must accelerate their initiatives to reduce harmful emissions. President Lula's request came after representatives of the G20 nations approved a joint statement calling for a pact to fight hunger, more aid for Gaza, an end to the war in Ukraine and other goals.
Pulpan from the International Chamber of Commerce lets us know that "The G20 is responsible for 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions" declared Lula, and "even if we are not walking at the same speed, we can all take one step further".
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva focused the session on environmental challenges, saying that developed countries should consider bringing forward their 2050 emissions targets to 2040 or 2045.
During the summit, which was held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, G20 leaders also met to discuss changes in the world order, from rising global tensions to changes on the international political scene.
The agenda focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation before the newly elected US President, Donald Trump, takes full office in January.
EU Leaders also took the opportunity to hold further meetings in the margins of the summit, such as meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron, who reiterated France's commitment to strengthening relations with China and insisted that the two countries share the same views on promoting peace in Ukraine. "The world we live in, as you have just reminded us, is one of increasing instability, tensions and wars. And I believe that we truly share a common vision in supporting the Charter of the United Nations and promoting an Agenda for Peace", he said. Macron said to Jinping. "We meet on the thousandth day of the war between Ukraine and Russia, and I know that you share, like us, the desire for a lasting Peace, respectful of the United Nations Charter, and that you share, like us, the same concern... "he added.
A Joint Declaration signed by representatives of the G20 countries called for urgent humanitarian assistance and better protection of civilians involved in conflicts in the Middle East.
The statement also includes Brazil's proposal to tax billionaires' incomes by 2% (two percent), focuses on ways to eradicate world hunger and pledges to work towards "transformative reform" of the United Nations Security Council United. From the International Chamber of Commerce, Pulpan recalls that Brazil has just increased VAT to 28%, and even if the Lula government focuses on indirect taxes, it seems that it is the highest in the world, even if it will gradually come into force in 2026 and regime in 2033.
