The President of the United States has implemented an unparalleled move that could become a tool for political negotiation, and change the current world economic balance. In fact, the US administration wants to apply the customs duties announced at the beginning of April this year starting from the upcoming first of August. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirms that if an agreement is not found with Washington soon, the tariffs will come into effect on August 1, 2025.

The deadline had previously been set for July 9, but on July 4, President Donald Trump declared that the countries affected by the measure would not start paying before August 1. Bessent explains to CNN, that "President Trump is sending letters to some trading partners who account for 95 percent of our trade deficit, saying that, if things are not resolved, on August 1 they will return to the tariff levels of April 2". At the moment, agreements with the United Kingdom and Vietnam have been announced, but he expects "several important announcements in the coming days", despite "a lot of resistance from other parties".

President Trump from the United States announced that the first letters will be sent at 4 pm on July 7, at a press conference to journalists in the late afternoon of July 6, Donald Trump explained that "twelve, maybe fifteen letters" would be sent starting July 7, followed by others in the following days, "and we have also reached some agreements", said the President, without giving further details. But "I think we will have an agreement in most cases by July 9."

Howard Lutnick, the US Secretary of Commerce confirmed that the tariffs will come into force on August 1 "but in any case the president is defining the tariffs and agreements".

Karoline Leavitt, the White House spokeswoman, said that after South Korea and Japan, "there will be approximately 12 other countries that will receive notifications and letters directly from the President" of the United States.

Kevin Hassett, the White House's top economic adviser, told CBS that "there will be deals" perhaps "at the last minute," but did not provide a specific number.

The US administration has announced that it has begun to send letters to individual countries and has met to write the one for Brussels as well, but the last word belongs to President Trump.
